Matariki is considered a time to remember those who have passed from the last year, and Pōhutukawa is the star that connects Matariki to the deceased. When an individual passes, their spiried undertakes a journey along Te Ara Wairua, the pathway of the spirits, ending at the Northern part of the North island, where an ancient põhutukawa tree stands.
