Nicola Shuttleworth is a Pōneke, Wellington based potter working from her studio in Island Bay. A practice of twenty years making functional pottery to hold and to use. She believes in living daily life with handmade objects that enrich experiences with friends and family.
Nicola produces stacks, groups and individual pieces using similar forms with warm, natural coloured glazes. She looks to the early New Zealand studio potters when pottery was on many Aotearoa tables. It was a period when Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada had an impact on the thinking and development of pottery. Forms were clean, simple, and functional. Nicola explores these ideas in a contemporary setting, working with a variety of stoneware and mid-firing clay making her own glazes.
