KAUKAU is pleased to present Spoon Sweets, a solo exhibition by Billie Culy.
A sweet preserve, served in a spoon as a gesture of hospitality. They can be made from almost any fruit, though sour and bitter fruits are especially prized. While in Greece we were often served these after a meal or while visiting people. In Athens, sometimes they would be made with the bitter oranges from the trees that lined the streets.
I made these works while spending time in various Greek communities and neighbourhoods. They are expressions of gratitude for hospitality. As someone from another place, I made small observations, subtle shifts of light and sound, how they inform an experience of a place and people. I wanted to feel the heat and breeze when looking at them. A towel, bed sheet or a box of tissues, watching these unassuming objects reflecting one another in a landscape.
