Artist

Nick Mullay

Nick Mullaly is an artist working across the unceded lands of the Kulin Nations, Melbourne. He specialises in oil painting and drawing, after completing a BFA Honours degree at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2018.

Mullaly’s oil paintings combine filmic and expressionistic sensibilities to explore romance, desire, and the pregnant moment. These paintings emerge from drawings, observations and notes as poetic or allegorical prompts, illuminated in an amber glow. Ambiguity of time and gesture is formed in unsharpened and fuzzy brush marks, pictures within pictures, and a freeze frame sensibility. Light interacting with shadow and careful attention to framing embed these compositions with intimacy. Languid figures cradle lovers and charged objects, opening hidden moments and hidden desires.

Recent exhibitions include: Hot Hot Hot, NAP Contemporary, Mildura (2022); Serotonin! (Group Show), Futures Gallery, Collingwood (2022); Be My Once In A Lifetime (Group Show), Fiona and Sidney Myer Gallery, Southbank (2022).
