'the garden where ceramics are fired'

Jack Tilson speaks about his latest collection of ceramics:

This collection is inspired by the garden where the ceramics are fired. The clay, of local origin, connects the work to New Lynn, Tāmaki Makaurau. Wood firing and salt glazing are the primary methods used, similar in approach to the bygone local brick and pipe industry. A lone spider, in a garden of birds.

Strap handles added to many of the mugs. The straps are cozy, fitting the gentle cylindrical bodies. Handles become a feature of the larger pieces, where multiple handles suggest coming together and celebration, inviting you to pick them up. The multi-handling is also repelling, as on second glance you wonder whether they might crawl, or take flight.

Carving away, impressing patterns and the addition of handles, ears, limbs and eyes creates an interplay between the different making steps. When you view the collection as a group the balance of varying actions suggests animism, a coming to life!

Direct application of glaze, is sparing yet used to suggest movement, or soften the carving or interior spaces of  certain works. Grey and green glaze complements the earth tones found in many of the works and creates visual play between pieces. There is a distinct individuality to each of the pieces too, which means you can’t help but get closer!
